Greenland PM Tells Trump to Drop ‘Annexation Talk’ as Tensions Rise

Greenland PM Tells Trump to Drop ‘Annexation Talk’ as Tensions Rise OIP 6

Greenland’s leadership has pushed back strongly against renewed remarks from former U.S. President Donald Trump, calling on him to abandon what it described as unrealistic ideas about taking control of the Arctic territory. The response underlines Greenland’s insistence on sovereignty and its right to decide its own future without external pressure.

Greenland Rejects Any Idea of Takeover

Speaking publicly, Greenland Prime Minister Múte Egede made it clear that the island is not for sale and will never be open to annexation. He stressed that Greenland is a self-governing region whose people alone have the authority to shape its political path.
According to the prime minister, repeated comments about ownership or control show a lack of respect for democratic values and international norms.

Call for Respect and Cooperation

Greenland’s government emphasized that relations with the United States should be based on partnership, not possession. While acknowledging cooperation in areas such as security, research, and trade, the prime minister said such ties must be built on mutual respect. He added that Greenland welcomes dialogue but rejects any narrative that questions its autonomy.

Why Greenland Matters Strategically

Greenland’s growing global importance comes from its Arctic location, natural resources, and role in climate research. As interest in the region increases, its leaders say global powers must recognize Greenland as a partner — not a prize. The government reiterated that future decisions will be guided by the will of Greenland’s people and international law.
