Germany Confirms Transfer of Over One-Third of Patriot Air Defence Fleet to Ukraine
BERLIN — German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius has confirmed the extent of Germany’s military support regarding strategic air defence assets for Ukraine, revealing that the Bundeswehr has transferred a substantial portion of its Patriot missile system inventory to Kyiv.
In a recent statement, Minister Pistorius detailed that Germany has now provided Ukraine with five of its twelve Patriot air defence systems. This allocation represents more than one-third of the country’s total operational stock of the sophisticated surface-to-air missile batteries. The transfer highlights the significant material commitment Berlin has undertaken to bolster Ukraine’s defensive capabilities against continuing aerial threats.
The Patriot system is a critical component of modern air defence, prized for its ability to intercept tactical ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and advanced aircraft. By drawing directly from its own limited inventory, the German Ministry of Defence has prioritized the immediate security needs of Ukraine in the face of persistent missile and drone attacks targeting energy infrastructure and civilian centers.
In addition to the high-value Patriot batteries, Minister Pistorius emphasized that German support includes a steady stream of other essential defensive weaponry. He noted that the government is “consistently delivering” IRIS-T air defence systems, another advanced platform designed to protect cities and armies from air attacks. Along with these launchers, Germany maintains a continuous supply line of guided missiles and ammunition of various types to ensure the operational readiness of the provided systems.
This announcement underscores Germany’s role as a primary European supplier of military aid to Ukraine. The reduction of domestic stocks by such a significant margin reflects the strategic calculations being made in Berlin to sustain Ukraine’s resistance efforts.
