A 64-year-old retired restaurant owner from New York has been arrested in Florida after authorities say he was driving under the influence when a golf cart crash claimed the life of his wife. The tragedy happened late evening during a ride through their retirement community, and a subsequent investigation led to charges of DUI and refusal to submit to testing.

Golf Cart Accident in Retirement Community Results in Fatality

On the night of November 30, the couple — residents of a gated community in Nocatee, Florida — were riding in a golf cart when the 58-year-old woman fell from the vehicle around 10:45 p.m. Emergency responders transported her to a trauma hospital, but she succumbed to severe head injuries the next day. Investigators determined that the husband was driving and reportedly showed signs of intoxication.

According to the official police account, officers at the scene noted the driver had “bloodshot and watery” eyes and could smell alcohol from a short distance. He is said to have refused both a field sobriety test and a breathalyzer.

Husband Arrested, Community Raises Safety Warnings

The man was booked on charges of driving under the influence and refusal to submit to police testing. He was later released on bond but remains under suspicion pending further proceedings.

Neighbors in the retirement community expressed concern, noting that a recently added greenway had increased traffic of golf carts and e-bikes — a change some believe contributed to the fatal accident.

Local safety advocates and residents are urging stricter regulations: they warn that golf carts — often treated like toys — can be deadly when combined with alcohol or reckless driving.

Former Restaurateur’s Background Adds Shock to Tragedy

The man previously co-owned a diner in Queens, New York, before relocating to Florida after retirement. His former business was known for treating customers like family — a reputation that now stands in stark contrast to the tragic incident.

Friends and family described him as “heartbroken” and in deep shock over the loss — his lawyer insists he was not impaired and maintains his innocence.
