Sherrone Moore, the recently dismissed head coach of the University of Michigan football program, was taken into police custody on Wednesday following an alleged assault incident, just hours after the school terminated his contract for cause. The case is under active investigation, and no formal charges have been announced.

Police Detain Ex-Coach During Assault Probe

Law enforcement in Washtenaw County confirmed that Moore, 39, was booked into the county jail late Wednesday after officers responded to a reported assault near Ann Arbor, Michigan. According to authorities, the incident was not random, and officers have stated there is no ongoing threat to the wider community. Moore remains in custody while prosecutors review the case, and officials are withholding specific details as the investigation continues.

University Fires Moore Ahead of Legal Trouble

Earlier the same day, the University of Michigan announced Moore’s immediate dismissal “with cause.” The decision followed the conclusion of an internal review that uncovered credible evidence the coach had engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member, in violation of university policy. The school emphasized its commitment to maintaining a professional environment and enforcing conduct standards.

Team Leadership Shift and Season Outlook

In light of Moore’s departure, Michigan has named associate coach Biff Poggi as the interim head coach. Poggi, who served in a supporting role earlier this season, will lead the Wolverines in their upcoming postseason game. Michigan wraps up the season with a 9-3 record and is slated to compete in the Citrus Bowl at the end of December.
