Flyers Rally From Early Deficit But Fall to Kings in Overtime for Fourth Consecutive Loss
The Philadelphia Flyers erased a two-goal deficit to force overtime on Saturday afternoon but ultimately succumbed to the Los Angeles Kings, 3-2, extending their losing streak to four games. Quinton Byfield scored the decisive goal at 2:48 of the extra period, firing a one-timer off a pass from Adrian Kempe to seal the victory for the visitors at Xfinity Mobile Arena.
Kempe was the offensive catalyst for Los Angeles, scoring two goals within a span of 3 minutes and 38 seconds in the first period to establish an early 2-0 lead. His performance was instrumental in handing the Flyers their 11th loss in their last 13 contests. Los Angeles captain Anze Kopitar returned to the lineup after missing 11 games with a lower-body injury, adding stability to a Kings team that has now won four of its last five games.
Philadelphia’s comeback began early in the second period when Trevor Zegras scored on a power play, converting a cross-ice pass from Bobby Brink. Travis Konecny tied the game early in the third period, deflecting a shot to extend his goal-scoring streak to three games. Despite the momentum shift, the Flyers could not complete the turnaround. Goaltender Dan Vladar made 18 saves for Philadelphia, while Darcy Kuemper stopped 19 shots for Los Angeles.
While the Flyers managed to salvage a point in the standings by pushing the game beyond regulation, critical issues remain regarding their defensive consistency. The team dug themselves an early hole, necessitating a high-energy rally that left them vulnerable in the 3-on-3 overtime session. Furthermore, the Flyers benefited from a successful offside challenge in the first period that negated what would have been a third Kings goal by former Flyer Andrei Kuzmenko. Without that reprieve, the game likely would have slipped out of reach much earlier, highlighting the precarious nature of Philadelphia’s current form.
The loss leaves Philadelphia with a 2-8-3 record over their last 13 games, a slide that has significantly damaged their playoff positioning. The Flyers will attempt to snap their skid when they host the Washington Capitals on Tuesday, while the Kings conclude their five-game road trip against the Carolina Hurricanes on Sunday.
