Florida Couple Arrested After Allegedly Fabricating Son’s Cancer Diagnosis

Authorities in Florida have arrested a couple accused of falsely claiming their teenage son had cancer in order to collect money through community donations and fundraising efforts. Investigators say the pair raised thousands of dollars by telling people their 15-year-old child was battling a serious illness, but medical records later revealed the diagnosis was not real.

The suspects, identified as Edward Downing and Stephanie Skeris, were taken into custody following a months-long investigation. Law enforcement officials say the couple allegedly created a story that their son had cancer affecting several parts of his body and needed financial support for treatment.

Police have charged the couple with fraud-related offenses as well as child neglect.

Fundraisers and Community Support Generated Thousands

According to investigators, the parents sought help from local residents, businesses, and online supporters by claiming their son was undergoing medical treatment. Their story led to multiple fundraising events and donation drives in the community.

One local restaurant even organized a promotion to raise money for the family, donating a portion of sales to support what people believed was a teenager’s fight against cancer. Community members contributed through various campaigns and charitable events, believing the funds would help cover medical expenses.

Authorities say the donations were placed into a bank account set up specifically for the boy’s alleged medical care.

Investigation Revealed No Cancer Diagnosis

During the investigation, detectives reviewed the teen’s medical history and determined there was no evidence that he had ever been diagnosed with cancer. The findings raised serious concerns about the authenticity of the claims used to collect money from donors.

Financial records examined by investigators reportedly showed that the donated funds were not used for medical treatment. Instead, officials allege the money was spent on everyday personal expenses such as fuel, restaurant meals, retail purchases, and cash withdrawals.

Following the parents’ arrest, authorities placed the teenager in protective care due to concerns about his welfare. Both suspects were later released on bond while the case proceeds through the legal system.

Ongoing Case Raises Questions About Charity Fraud

The case has shocked many in the community who believed they were helping a seriously ill teenager. Officials say incidents like this can damage public trust in legitimate fundraising campaigns and charities that depend on community support.

Law enforcement continues to review evidence as the legal process moves forward.
