Florida Man Allegedly Dumps Thousands In Stolen Meat After Catching Girlfriend Cooking With Another Man
A 30-year-old Jacksonville man is facing felony retail theft charges after allegedly stealing nearly $4,000 worth of premium cuts from two grocery stores, only to discard the haul upon discovering his girlfriend was cooking with another man. The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office arrested Heannys O. Alvarez Reyna following the January 5 incidents, which spanned two separate Publix locations in Palm Coast, Florida.
According to investigators, surveillance footage captured Alvarez Reyna first entering the Belle Terre Crossings Publix, where he allegedly selected $1,574.86 worth of beef and lamb before leaving without paying. Deputies report that less than 20 minutes later, he visited a second location at Island Walk, allegedly taking an additional $2,084 in pork, top sirloin, brisket, and personal care products. The total value of the stolen goods was estimated at over $3,600.
Following his arrest, Alvarez Reyna provided detectives with an explanation for the missing merchandise that challenged the assumption of a typical fencing operation. He claimed that after the thefts, he drove directly to his girlfriend’s residence, intending to share the food. However, upon arrival, he observed her cooking with another man. Driven by the emotional distress of the discovery, Alvarez Reyna allegedly told police he disposed of the majority of the stolen meat rather than selling or consuming it.
Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly addressed the incident with a series of puns regarding the nature of the crime, describing it as a “high-steaks operation” where the suspect’s method “wasn’t kosher.” Staly noted that while the suspect attempted to “meat” his budget through theft, he would now face the consequences at the “Green Roof Inn,” the Sheriff’s nickname for the county jail.
Alvarez Reyna remains in custody at the Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility on a $5,000 bond. Authorities noted that he also faces a detainer from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Retail theft remains a significant focus for Florida law enforcement, with state officials recently increasing penalties for organized retail crime to combat losses that drive up consumer prices.
