FBI Intercepts ISIS-Linked Attack Plan Ahead of New Year’s Eve

In a high-profile counterterrorism action, FBI agents arrested an 18-year-old in North Carolina after disrupting a suspected ISIS-inspired attack intended to occur on New Year’s Eve. Federal law enforcement officials say the plot was prevented before any injuries could occur.

Suspect Arrested After Longstanding Investigation

Christian Sturdivant, a resident of Mint Hill near Charlotte, was taken into custody at the end of December following a lengthy investigation. Prosecutors charged him with attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization.

Authorities say the FBI first identified the suspect’s extremist sympathies in 2022, when he was a minor, after he communicated with individuals believed to be associated with ISIS. Investigators allege he received guidance to wear all black and carry out violent acts.

Alleged Plot Details and Evidence Found

According to court documents, Sturdivant planned to target a grocery store and nearby fast-food restaurant with knives and hammers on New Year’s Eve. During a raid of his home, agents recovered weapons and a handwritten note labeled “New Years Attack 2026” outlining his intentions, including harming first responders.

Officials also say the teenager believed he was communicating with fellow extremists, but was actually interacting with undercover law enforcement. The FBI emphasized that the suspect’s actions were directly inspired by the ideology of the Islamic State group.

Sturdivant made his first federal court appearance following the arrest, remaining in custody as the case proceeds.
