Violent chain of events begins at local grocery store
A shocking midday shooting at a neighborhood grocery store sent shockwaves through Omaha. A man in his 20s reportedly opened fire, striking a 61-year-old man multiple times in the chest. The victim was rushed to hospital in critical condition.
Pursuit ends in gas-station gunfight; officers return fire
Police quickly tracked the suspect’s vehicle using the license plate from the crime scene. The hunt ended at a gas station near 33rd & L streets, where the suspect entered the restroom. When officers ordered him out, he opened fire — wounding one officer before retreating back inside.
After a second command to surrender, the suspect fired again. A second officer was hit directly, and a third was wounded by shrapnel. Responding officers returned fire, killing the suspect. A bystander inside the restroom escaped unharmed. According to the department, the injured officers suffered serious but non-life-threatening wounds; one of them has since been released from hospital.
