Richmond Street Shooting Leaves Multiple Victims
RICHMOND, Va. — Two people were killed and at least seven others were wounded in a shooting that erupted in a popular entertainment district in Richmond in the early hours of Saturday, police officials say. Authorities say the violence followed a fight on a lively street known for its nightlife, leading to chaos and gunfire that left the community shaken.
Violence Erupts After Late-Night Altercation
According to Richmond police, the disturbance began around 2:45 a.m. when a fight broke out on a street in the historic Shockoe Bottom district, an area filled with restaurants, bars and clubs. Officers in the vicinity reported seeing a large group and vehicles abruptly leaving the scene before gunshots were heard.
A man and a woman tragically died at the scene from multiple gunshot wounds. Police Chief Rick Edwards confirmed there were at least two shooters involved, though the motive remains under investigation.
Seven Others Hospitalized With Gunshot Injuries
In addition to the two fatalities, police say three men and four women were struck by gunfire and taken to local hospitals for treatment. Their conditions have not been publicly disclosed, and authorities have not commented on whether any suspects have been arrested.
Investigators are piecing together how the late-night dispute escalated into a deadly shooting in one of Richmond’s busiest entertainment hubs.
Community Responds to Shock and Loss
Witnesses described scenes of panic as celebrants and club-goers scrambled for safety after shots were fired. Some reports suggest that the initial fight may have begun during a birthday celebration before spiraling into violence that caught bystanders in the crossfire.
Law enforcement officials have urged anyone with additional information to come forward as the investigation continues.
