Daughter of Minnesota Gubernatorial Candidate Jeff Johnson Fatally Stabbed; Husband in Custody
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The daughter of Minnesota Republican gubernatorial candidate Jeff Johnson was fatally stabbed on Saturday evening in St. Cloud, leading to the suspension of her father’s political campaign and a homicide investigation that has placed her husband in custody.
Hallie Marie Tobler, 22, was found deceased inside her apartment on the 3100 block of 40th Avenue South after police responded to a medical emergency call at approximately 8:20 p.m. on Saturday. The Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office subsequently confirmed that Tobler died from multiple stab wounds.
Officers at the scene also discovered the victim’s husband, Dylan Michael Tobler, 23, inside the residence. He had sustained life-threatening injuries that investigators believe were self-inflicted. He was transported to St. Cloud Hospital, where he remains in stable condition under police supervision.
According to the St. Cloud Police Department, Dylan Tobler is considered the sole suspect in the case. Authorities stated that he will be booked into the Stearns County Jail upon his release from the hospital and is facing charges related to the homicide. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is assisting local authorities with the ongoing investigation.
Following the tragedy, Jeff Johnson, a former St. Cloud City Council member currently seeking the Republican nomination for governor, announced the immediate suspension of his campaign. The Republican Party of Minnesota released a statement on Monday confirming the suspension and expressing condolences to the Johnson family.
“Out of respect for his family and the enormity of this loss, Jeff has suspended his campaign for Governor of Minnesota,” the statement read. “The loss of a child is unimaginable, and our thoughts and prayers are with them as they grieve this devastating tragedy.”
Court records indicate that Dylan Tobler had previous contact with law enforcement regarding domestic issues. He was convicted of disorderly conduct in January 2026 stemming from an incident in June 2025 involving his wife. The charge, originally a misdemeanor for domestic assault involving choking, was later pleaded down to a petty misdemeanor.
As the investigation continues, officials have requested privacy for the Johnson family. Police have confirmed there is no lingering threat to the public related to this incident.
