A shocking incident has rocked the football program at University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) after a player was arrested following an alleged attack on two of his teammates just hours before the scheduled game. The arrests occurred at the team’s training centre, on the same day the team was set to take the field.

Allegations Surface at Training Facility

Law enforcement reports reveal that a 20-year-old redshirt freshman, identified in jail records as Daniel Mincey, was arrested at 12:40 p.m. on Saturday, charged with aggravated assault and attempted murder. The alleged incident occurred at UAB’s Football Operations Centre, shortly before the team was due to play a home game at Protective Stadium in Birmingham. Both injured teammates were rushed to UAB Hospital and the city’s fire and rescue service confirmed their stable condition.

University Response and Game Day Impact

In a statement, the university confirmed two players were injured in a morning incident and that the suspect remained in custody while an investigation is underway. Despite the unfolding crisis, the program opted to proceed with the game, emphasising that the safety and welfare of its students remain its top priority. At the time of the incident, the team held a season record of 3-7.

Next Steps in Investigation

Authorities say the motive and full details surrounding the stabbing remain unclear. The university and local law enforcement are collaborating on the investigation, and student privacy rules mean the identities of the injured players have not been released. Legal proceedings for Mincey are ongoing as the community grapples with the disruption to a programme already facing a challenging season.
