Britney Spears Sells Entire Music Catalog to Primary Wave for Reported $200 Million
Pop superstar Britney Spears has sold the rights to her entire music catalog to independent music publisher Primary Wave, marking a significant milestone in the management of her musical legacy. Our news partners at the BBC have learned that the deal was finalized on December 30 for an estimated $200 million.
Spears, 44, has been a defining figure in pop music since her debut in the late 1990s. The acquisition reportedly encompasses her extensive discography, which includes global chart-toppers such as “…Baby One More Time,” “Oops!… I Did It Again,” and “Toxic.” The sale transfers the publishing rights and future income streams from these hits to Primary Wave, a boutique company well-versed in managing legendary portfolios, including the estates of Whitney Houston and Prince, as well as a stake in the Nirvana catalog.
This transaction places Spears among a growing list of high-profile artists who have monetized their back catalogs in recent years to capitalize on the soaring value of music rights. Similar deals have been struck by Justin Bieber, who reportedly sold his rights for $200 million, and Bruce Springsteen, whose catalog commanded an estimated $500 million.
For Spears, the move follows a period of major personal and professional transitions, most notably the termination of her 13-year conservatorship in 2021 and the release of her best-selling memoir, “The Woman in Me,” in 2023. In January 2024, Spears publicly stated on social media that she would “never return to the music industry,” signaling a permanent shift away from her career as a performing pop star. This sale appears to be a financial solidification of that decision.
Both Primary Wave and representatives for the singer have declined to comment publicly on the specific financial terms of the agreement.
