Early Sunday morning, a man carrying a firearm and a fuel can was shot and killed by law enforcement after breaching the secure perimeter of the Mar-a-Lago property in Palm Beach, Florida, United States Secret Service officials said. The incident happened at around 1:30 a.m. local time, and no protective personnel were on site at the time.
Security Breach at High-Profile Florida Estate
Authorities reported that the suspect, identified as a 21-year-old man from North Carolina, drove through the north gate of the resort’s secure perimeter shortly before being confronted by officers. He was seen carrying what appeared to be a shotgun and a gasoline container when law enforcement moved in.
Law enforcement officials, including Secret Service agents and a Palm Beach County sheriff’s deputy, ordered the man to drop his items. When he raised the shotgun into what was perceived as a threatening position, officers opened fire, killing him at the scene. No law enforcement personnel were injured in the encounter.
Trump Not Present, Investigation Underway
At the time of the shooting, former President Donald Trump and the First Lady were in Washington, D.C., and were not at the Mar-a-Lago estate. No protectees under Secret Service detail were present during the incident.
The FBI has taken the lead on the ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding the security breach, including efforts to understand the individual’s motive and actions. Local residents have been encouraged to check any available security camera footage for relevant information.
Officials remain tight-lipped on a possible motive and have not released further personal details about the man. The investigation is expected to continue for days as authorities piece together what led to the early-morning confrontation.
