Austin Beutner’s Daughter Found in Distress Near Palmdale Highway Before Dying
Emily Beutner, the 22-year-old daughter of Los Angeles mayoral candidate and former LAUSD Superintendent Austin Beutner, was discovered in a state of medical distress beside a highway in Palmdale shortly before her death earlier this month. Authorities confirmed that a passerby alerted law enforcement after midnight on January 6 to a woman needing assistance near the intersection of Sierra Highway and Technology Drive.
Deputies from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department responded to the scene, where paramedics treated Emily Beutner before transporting her to a nearby hospital. She was subsequently pronounced dead at the medical facility. While the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner has listed the cause of death as “deferred” pending additional investigation and toxicology results, Sheriff’s homicide detectives have assumed control of the inquiry. Lt. Michael Modica of the sheriff’s homicide bureau stated that this transfer of authority is standard procedure when a young person is found in such circumstances and does not necessarily indicate evidence of foul play.
The location where she was found is described as being surrounded by empty fields. Investigators have not publicly specified how long she may have been by the roadside before being discovered.
Austin Beutner, who announced his bid for mayor in October and previously served as the publisher of the Los Angeles Times and First Deputy Mayor of Los Angeles, released a brief statement confirming the tragedy. “My family has experienced the unimaginable loss of our beloved daughter. We ask for privacy and your prayers at this time,” he said.
Incumbent Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, whom Beutner is challenging in the upcoming election, issued a statement expressing her condolences. “I am profoundly saddened by the news of the tragic passing of Austin Beutner’s daughter,” Bass stated. “There is no way to describe the depth of pain experienced by parents who have lost a child.”
Emily Beutner was the youngest of Austin Beutner’s four children and was a student at Loyola Marymount University. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death remains ongoing.
