ICE Lodges Detainer for Criminal Illegal Alien Accused of Heinous Crimes Against Child in California
CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. — U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has taken decisive action in the case of a Mexican national accused of sexually assaulting a minor in Southern California, highlighting a significant enforcement move against what federal officials are describing as a serious threat to public safety.
Enrique Bautista Vasquez, 20, was arrested by the Cathedral City Police Department following an investigation into a brutal sexual assault that occurred on New Year’s Eve. Vasquez faces charges of lewd and lascivious acts with a minor and rape. Authorities allege that Vasquez coerced a 14-year-old autistic girl into his residence and sexually abused her.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) confirmed that ICE has lodged a formal detainer against Vasquez, signaling federal intent to take custody of the suspect for removal proceedings. In a statement addressing the arrest, DHS officials criticized previous immigration policies, noting that Vasquez had been released into the U.S. interior during the Biden Administration.
According to DHS records, Vasquez was previously encountered by U.S. Border Patrol on December 16, 2024, and issued a final order of removal. However, officials state he re-entered the country illegally on January 2, 2025, and was subsequently released into the community.
“This monster was released into our country during the Biden Administration,” a DHS spokesperson stated, emphasizing the agency’s renewed focus on removing individuals deemed “the worst of the worst” from American communities. “Thanks to our brave ICE officers, this pedophile is off the streets of California.”
The case has drawn sharp attention to the intersection of local law enforcement and federal immigration policy. Cathedral City police reported that Vasquez was found in possession of fraudulent identification documents, including a fake Social Security card and Permanent Resident card.
ICE officials have reiterated their commitment to identifying and removing foreign nationals who pose a threat to vulnerable populations. The agency continues to urge local jurisdictions to cooperate with federal detainers to ensure that criminal offenders are not released back into the public.
Vasquez remains in custody as legal proceedings regarding both his criminal charges and immigration status move forward.
