A 22-year-old man has been taken into custody in connection to a deadly shooting at the food court of the MGM National Harbor resort and casino in Maryland. The victim, 23-year-old Darnell Hawkins Jr., was shot and killed while ordering food on Wednesday morning. Police say the attack was not random — and surveillance video played a critical role in identifying and apprehending the suspect just hours later.

Authorities arrested Benjamin Williams just over 14 hours after the fatal shooting, finding him at a residence in College Park early Thursday. He now faces charges including first- and second-degree murder, assault, and weapons offenses.
Police confirmed that Williams and the victim, Darnell Hawkins Jr., knew each other, though the motive for the shooting has not yet been established.

The shooting occurred at about 11:55 a.m. Wednesday when Hawkins was ordering food. Investigators say Williams had “laid in wait,” entered the food court, and opened fire without any exchange of words. After the shooting, he fled the scene in a car.
Clients and visitors at the time reportedly fled in panic, and nearby schools briefly locked down as a precaution — though authorities later confirmed there was no ongoing threat to the public.
Casino security footage was essential to tracking down Williams. Officials emphasized that nearly every area of the resort is under video surveillance, which played a “vital role” in bringing the case to a quick resolution.

In a press briefing, Prince George’s County Police Department Chief George Nader and County Executive Aisha Braveboy stressed that this was an isolated incident, not indicative of a broader safety problem at the resort. Crime data shows violent incidents at the casino have actually decreased this year.
Braveboy noted the personal impact on the victim’s family and community: Hawkins was more than a statistic — he was a son, brother, and father whose life was cut tragically short.
