Man arrested and charged with double homicide following Melbourne birthday-party stabbing e16a2a18a7bd44eed9693e38b33326dc

A 30-year-old man has been taken into custody and formally charged with killing two men during a first-birthday party in Melbourne’s outer south-east. The victims — aged 23 and 54 — died at the scene after being stabbed inside a residence in the suburb of Clyde North. The accused appeared in court today, and the case is being treated as a high-priority homicide investigation by the local police homicide unit.

Subhead 1: The incident and police response

The fatal incident occurred at a house in the suburb of Clyde North just after 9.30 pm on Thursday, 16 January, when emergency services were called to reports of a violent altercation. Victoria Police found two men suffering stab injuries to their upper bodies; despite medical intervention by paramedics, both victims were pronounced dead at the scene. The younger victim was aged 23, and the other 54, both from the nearby suburb of Seaford.
Shortly after, detectives arrested a man believed to have no fixed address in the Doveton area. He was interviewed and charged with two counts of murder, and remanded to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court.

Subhead 2: From celebration to tragedy — investigation under way

The location of the double homicide was a private home where guests were gathered for a first-birthday celebration. What began as a festive event escalated into violence, with investigators now examining how the dispute began, who was present, and the motive behind the stabbing. The homicide squad has established a crime scene and is urging anyone with CCTV or mobile footage of the incident to come forward.
Legal representatives for the accused have indicated their client is in the process of withdrawing from substance misuse, as noted during the court appearance.

Subhead 3: Legal proceedings and next steps

The defendant appeared in court for the first time and remains in custody. With the suspect aged 30, the charges carry the maximum penalty of life imprisonment. Investigators are continuing to piece together the timeline and the dynamics of the event, including identifying other people at the gathering and any weapons used.
Community members are being reassured that the matter is under thorough investigation, and police have taken the unusual step of publicly seeking footage from bystanders, emphasising the importance of public cooperation.
