Fatal Shooting at Birmingham Residence

On a Thursday afternoon just after 12:15 p.m., officers from the Birmingham Police Department responded to a 911 call at a residence in the 2000 block of 10th Street in the Pratt City area of Birmingham. The caller, identified as 25-year-old Jeffrey Rogers, reported that an intruder had attempted to break into his home and that he had shot the intruder. When officers arrived, they found 20-year-old Bria McNeal‑Williams, of Center Point, lying unresponsive by the back door of the home. Fire and Rescue pronounced her dead at 12:30 p.m.

Investigation Turns to Domestic Circumstances

While Rogers initially claimed he acted in self-defense against a burglar, further investigation by the Birmingham Police suggested that the shooting was domestic in nature and that the victim and shooter had been in a relationship. Investigators have since charged Rogers with murder as well as firearms possession. He remains in the Jefferson County Jail without bond.

Implications and Next Steps

The case highlights issues of domestic violence and gun possession by convicted felons. Rogers’ status as a felon posed serious legal problems as well. As the investigation continues, authorities will review phone records, forensic evidence from the scene, and interviews with witnesses to determine whether Rogers’ claim of defending himself against a burglar holds any merit.
