A 16-year-old midfielder/forward from the youth academy of Ecuador’s prominent club lost his life at home when a stray bullet struck him, authorities said. The tragedy adds to a rising death toll among youth footballers in Ecuador, where gang-related violence is escalating sharply.

Rising toll on young footballers

The victim, part of the under-18 squad of one of Ecuador’s key clubs, was struck inside his residence in the port city. Local police confirmed that the bullet came from outside the home during a period of heightened insecurity in the region. The club offered condolences to the family, friends and teammates of the young athlete.

Fourth death this year linked to gunfire

This latest death marks at least the fourth time a footballer in Ecuador has been killed by gunfire this year. Earlier this year, players from second-division teams were also gunned down, underlining the depth of the crisis affecting sport at all levels across the country.

Context of growing violence in Ecuador

Ecuador has faced a significant upsurge in organized crime over recent years. Gangs affiliated with drug-trafficking networks from Colombia and Mexico are operating on Ecuadorian soil, and homicide rates have soared — one national observatory reported a 47 % increase in the first half of the year compared with the same period last year. The federal government has deployed military forces, but the results have been mixed at best.
