Son Sentenced in Shocking Wales Freezer Case

A court in Wales has sentenced a 60-year-old man to two years and four months in prison after he admitted to hiding his deceased mother’s body in a chest freezer for almost three years while continuing to collect her government benefits.

The man, Christopher Phillips of Porthcawl, pleaded guilty to preventing the lawful burial of a body and committing fraud by falsely claiming benefits after his mother’s death. Authorities said he received more than $105,000 (over £78,000) in pension and government payments that should have stopped once her death was reported.

Welfare Check Led to Grim Discovery

The case came to light in February 2026 after police carried out a welfare check at the family home. Officers had been told that Phillips’ elderly mother was staying with relatives in London, but he could not provide any details about where she was.

After searching the property, police found a chest freezer inside the house with flowers placed on top. Inside was the body of Sylvia Phillips, 89, wrapped in a blanket with flowers and a birthday card. Investigators later confirmed she had died in March 2023.

Court Hears Son Struggled to Accept Mother’s Death

During court proceedings, it was revealed that Christopher Phillips had been adopted by Sylvia when he was two years old and became her primary caregiver in 2008. His defense argued that he struggled deeply with grief and found it impossible to let her go, reportedly continuing to speak to her as though she were still alive.

Despite those circumstances, the court ruled that he had unlawfully concealed her death while benefiting financially through continued pension and welfare payments. Prosecutors said he purchased the freezer just days after his mother’s death and kept her body there until police discovered it years later.

Cause of Death Still Under Investigation

Authorities have completed an initial post-mortem examination, but Sylvia Phillips’ exact cause of death has not yet been established. Officials confirmed that a formal hearing will take place at a later date to determine how she died.

Investigators described the case as deeply tragic and expressed hope that Sylvia’s relatives could finally lay her to rest after the lengthy concealment.
