An American Airlines flight traveling from Dallas-Fort Worth to Newark was diverted to Baltimore after a passenger allegedly became violent and disruptive during the journey. The man was reportedly restrained with duct tape and zip ties by passengers and crew members before the aircraft landed safely.

The incident occurred on Thursday, September 3, aboard American Airlines Flight 618. The flight was approximately two hours into its journey when the situation reportedly escalated, forcing the crew to take action to protect people onboard.

Passenger Allegedly Became Violent During Flight

According to accounts from passengers, the disturbance began when the man started shouting offensive and abusive remarks toward people around him. Witnesses said he allegedly used racial and homophobic slurs and became increasingly aggressive.

The situation reportedly turned physical when the passenger allegedly attacked another traveler seated nearby. Passengers who attempted to intervene also became involved in the confrontation.

Juan Mejia, a passenger and former law enforcement officer, and fellow traveler Richard Olenick said they stepped in after witnessing the escalating incident. During the struggle, the disruptive passenger allegedly bit Mejia and continued resisting attempts to control him.

Witnesses also reported that the man suffered cuts during the incident and was bleeding.

Duct Tape and Zip Ties Used to Restrain Passenger

As the situation continued, crew members and passengers worked together to restrain the man. His wrists were secured with zip ties, while duct tape was used to keep him restrained in his first-class seat.

The passenger reportedly remained restrained for about 15 minutes while the aircraft diverted to Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport.

The reason for the passenger’s behavior remains unclear. Witnesses said they saw him receive a drink during the flight, but authorities have not established whether alcohol played any role in the incident.

Once the aircraft arrived in Baltimore, law enforcement officers boarded the plane and took the passenger into custody. The flight was subsequently allowed to continue toward Newark.

Passenger Arrested as Investigation Continues

The Maryland Transportation Authority Police reportedly booked the man on state charges following the incident. The FBI is also investigating what happened onboard and is considering whether federal charges could be appropriate.

Authorities have not publicly disclosed all details surrounding the case, and the investigation remains ongoing.

American Airlines said the safety and security of passengers and crew members is its highest priority and that it does not tolerate violence onboard its aircraft. The airline also thanked its employees and passengers for their professionalism and cooperation during the disruption.

The incident is another reminder of the challenges airlines can face when dealing with serious unruly passenger behavior. While most flights operate without major incidents, crews are trained to respond when a passenger’s actions create a potential safety risk for others onboard.
