The United States has extended restrictions on flights to Haiti’s capital as worsening gang violence continues to raise serious concerns about aviation safety. The Federal Aviation Administration has prolonged the ban affecting U.S. flights to Port-au-Prince until March 2027, further isolating the violence-hit capital from regular international air travel.

FAA Extends Port-au-Prince Flight Restrictions

The Federal Aviation Administration announced that restrictions on certain U.S. commercial and civilian flights operating in and around Port-au-Prince will remain in place until March 2, 2027.

The decision comes as Haiti continues to face deep instability, with armed gangs maintaining significant influence in and around the capital. The restrictions include limits on U.S.-registered civilian aircraft flying at lower altitudes over Port-au-Prince and parts of central Haiti.

The flight ban has been repeatedly renewed because of continuing concerns that aircraft could face attacks amid the country’s deteriorating security situation.

Aviation Safety Concerns Continue

U.S. aviation authorities initially imposed the restrictions after gunfire struck aircraft operating near Toussaint Louverture International Airport. The incident highlighted the dangers faced by planes attempting to land or operate in the capital during periods of intense gang activity.

Since then, regular commercial air connections to Port-au-Prince have remained severely disrupted. The ongoing restrictions have made travel to and from the Haitian capital increasingly difficult for passengers, businesses and humanitarian operations.

Gang Violence Deepens Haiti’s Crisis

Haiti is facing one of the most serious security crises in its recent history. Armed groups control large parts of Port-au-Prince and surrounding areas, while killings, kidnappings and attacks continue to force thousands of residents from their homes.

Authorities and international partners are working to strengthen security and push back against criminal groups, but violence remains widespread. The continued instability has also complicated efforts to restore normal transportation, improve humanitarian access and move the country toward greater political stability.

With security conditions showing little sign of immediate improvement, the extended U.S. flight restrictions underscore the continuing risks facing aviation in Haiti’s capital.
