R. Kelly Files Clemency Request to Reduce Prison Sentence

R&B singer R. Kelly has officially submitted a request asking U.S. President Donald Trump to commute his 31-year federal prison sentence. According to official records, the application has been filed with the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of the Pardon Attorney and is currently listed as pending.

The request seeks a sentence commutation, which would reduce the amount of time Kelly spends in prison. It does not ask for a full presidential pardon that would erase his convictions.

Convictions Led to 31-Year Prison Term

R. Kelly, whose legal name is Robert Sylvester Kelly, is serving a combined 31-year federal sentence following convictions in separate criminal cases.

In 2021, he was convicted on charges including racketeering and sex trafficking. A year later, he received an additional federal sentence related to child sexual abuse material and enticement offenses. Most of the second sentence runs concurrently with the first, extending his total prison term by one year. His current projected release date is in 2046.

Kelly has consistently denied the allegations and has continued to pursue legal options to challenge his convictions.

Attorney Raises Prison Safety Concerns

Kelly’s attorney, Beau Brindley, has argued that the singer faces serious safety risks while incarcerated. Earlier court filings claimed there was a threat to Kelly’s life involving prison officials and another inmate. Those allegations were previously presented in an emergency motion requesting home detention, but the court denied the request.

With the latest filing, Kelly is now seeking executive clemency through a sentence commutation. The Department of Justice has acknowledged the application, but no decision has been announced.
