In a troubling development for local law enforcement, a veteran member of the Calgary Police Service (CPS) has been formally charged with theft and fraud following an investigation into a string of hardware-store thefts totalling more than $10,000. The 20-year law-enforcement officer was relieved of duty and is now expected to appear in court.
Allegations and Investigation
Authorities say that over the course of approximately 12 months, multiple hardware-store thefts in Calgary and surrounding areas triggered a fraud investigation. Investigators determined that more than $10,000 worth of merchandise had been stolen. The accused officer was identified as the suspect, and on August 26, 2025, he was charged with one count of theft over $5,000 and one count of fraud over $5,000.
Impact on the Police Service and Public Trust
CPS leadership said the case has the potential to damage community confidence in law-enforcement. “When a criminal investigation involves one of our own members, it has the potential to undermine trust and confidence in our Service,” said Police Chief Katie McLellan. The service emphasised that it is committed to a thorough, impartial investigation to uphold its principles of accountability and integrity.
Next Steps and Court Proceedings
The accused officer is expected to make his first appearance in court on September 24, 2025. Meanwhile, he remains relieved of duty pending the outcome of the case. CPS has provided the case number (CL25815571/5277) and is working to ensure full transparency with the public.
