John Beam, a revered figure in Bay Area athletics and former football coach turned athletic director at Laney College in Oakland, died Friday morning after being shot on campus Thursday. Authorities have arrested a 27-year-old suspect in connection with the crime.
Shooting at Campus Facility
Officials say the incident occurred just before noon Thursday at Laney College’s Fieldhouse facility in Oakland. Witnesses reported that Coach Beam was struck while on campus and was rushed to a hospital in critical condition. He succumbed to his injuries the following morning, according to authorities. The suspect fled the scene initially but was later located and taken into custody early Friday.
Suspect Identified, Motive Unclear
The suspect, identified as 27-year-old Cedric Irving, has been arrested after surveillance footage and law enforcement tracing located him near a Bay Area Rapid Transit station around 3:15 a.m. Friday. Police stated Irving had no formal relationship with Coach Beam and was not a student or staff member at Laney. He had been seen loitering on campus previously, authorities added. A firearm matching ballistic evidence from the scene was recovered by investigators.
Legacy of a Coaching Legend
Beam was known for more than 40 years of influencing young athletes across the Bay Area. Before becoming Laney College’s athletic director last year, he guided numerous football players and helped build the region’s sports culture. At a press briefing, Oakland’s mayor described Beam as “a giant in Oakland who mentored thousands,” highlighting his impact beyond wins and losses. “His legacy is not measured by championships but by the young lives he believed in,” the mayor added.
