Former U.S. President Donald Trump has drawn a sharp comparison between Cuba and Venezuela, criticizing their leadership and warning about the impact on citizens in both countries. Speaking alongside U.S. Senator Marco Rubio, Trump said the two nations share similar political failures, particularly due to their close economic and strategic ties.
Trump Calls Cuba a “Failing Nation”
At a news conference, Trump described Cuba as a country in serious decline. He said the situation mirrors Venezuela in many ways, pointing to poor governance and hardship faced by ordinary people.
Trump emphasized that his concern extends beyond those still living on the island. According to him, the United States also has a responsibility to support Cubans who were forced to leave their homeland and now live in America.
Rubio Labels Cuba a “Disaster”
Rubio took a stronger tone, calling Cuba’s current state “a disaster.” He highlighted what he sees as Havana’s deep involvement in Venezuelan affairs, particularly in supporting the government of Nicolás Maduro.
Rubio claimed that Cuban personnel have played a role in protecting Maduro, adding that this influence should worry officials in Cuba itself.
Venezuela–Cuba Ties Raise Regional Concerns
The senator went further by suggesting that Venezuelans should push for independence from Cuban influence. He argued that the close relationship between Venezuela and Cuba has contributed to instability and weakened sovereignty.
Referring to Havana, Cuba’s capital, Rubio said that anyone involved in the Cuban government should be at least somewhat concerned about how these regional dynamics are unfolding.
