Heartbreaking Loss in Orrington: Infant Dies After Solo Time with Father
In a devastating incident in Orrington, Maine, a 12-week-old infant named Lyla died after being left alone with her 24-year-old father for the first extended period on January 16, 2026. First responders found the baby unresponsive and rushed her to a nearby medical center, but she later died from her injuries, authorities said.
Medical Findings Point to Severe Abuse
An autopsy revealed that Lyla suffered from multiple life-threatening injuries, including several broken ribs, bleeding in the brain and retinal hemorrhages — injuries consistent with serious physical trauma. These findings led the Chief Medical Examiner to officially classify her death as a homicide.
State Police and medical investigators determined that the injuries could not have been caused by normal infant activity, prompting further legal action against her father.
Father Arrested, Pleads Not Guilty
Following the medical examinations and police investigations, 24-year-old Shawn Samuels was arrested and initially charged with domestic violence, elevated aggravated assault and bail violations. After the autopsy confirmed the severity of the infant’s injuries, a murder charge was added.
Samuels appeared in court and entered a not guilty plea. A judge set bail at $250,000, and his next hearing is scheduled for February 13, 2026.
Family Remembers Lyla as a Joyful Baby
Loved ones have shared heartfelt tributes, remembering little Lyla as a joyful, sweet presence whose life was far too short. A fundraising effort has been launched to help cover funeral and support costs for the grieving family.
