Taiwan Flags Unusual Military Leadership Shifts
Taipei is closely observing what it calls “abnormal” changes in China’s military leadership after Beijing disclosed an investigation into its highest-ranking military officer outside of President Xi Jinping’s inner circle. Taiwan’s defence authorities have reiterated that, despite leadership upheaval on the mainland, the security threat from China remains significant, and Taipei will maintain a robust defensive posture.
Defence Minister Wellington Koo stressed that China’s moves are being monitored using joint intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance tools, both domestically and with international partners, to interpret Beijing’s intentions toward Taiwan.
Senior Chinese Generals Under Investigation
China has placed General Zhang Youxia, vice-chairman of the powerful Central Military Commission (CMC) and one of the military’s most influential figures, under investigation for serious violations of discipline and law. Another senior officer, General Liu Zhenli, has also been included in the probe.
Zhang, a decorated veteran with combat experience and long considered a key player in China’s military modernization drive, was widely viewed as a close ally of President Xi. His investigation marks one of the most dramatic moves in President Xi’s broad anti-corruption campaign that has reshaped leadership across the People’s Liberation Army.
Taiwan Continues High Readiness Amid Regional Tension
Taiwanese officials emphasize that daily military pressure from China continues, including routine aircraft and naval movements near the island — actions Taipei interprets as political and military coercion. As such, Taiwan vows not to let leadership changes on the mainland weaken its vigilance or preparedness.
Koo highlighted the importance of early-warning indicators in both military and non-military spheres to gauge China’s strategy and maintain Taiwan’s autonomy in deciding its own future.
