Suspect Deceased Following Active Shooter Incident at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School
Authorities in northeastern British Columbia have confirmed that a suspect is believed to be dead following an active shooter incident at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School. The Tumbler Ridge RCMP responded to the scene at approximately 1:20 p.m. local time on Tuesday, issuing a critical emergency alert to residents in the area.
According to the emergency alert broadcast to mobile devices, the suspect was described as a woman with brown hair wearing a dress. While police have stated that the “original suspect” is deceased, investigators are currently working to verify if a second individual was involved. The public has been urged to remain vigilant as officers clear the facility.
There is currently no official confirmation regarding the number of casualties. Law enforcement officials noted they are still “working to determine the total number of victims involved” in the shooting. School District 59 (Peace River South) confirmed that lockdowns and “secure and hold” protocols were immediately enacted at both Tumbler Ridge Secondary and the adjacent Tumbler Ridge Elementary School to ensure the safety of students and staff.
Tumbler Ridge is a remote district municipality of approximately 2,000 residents located in the foothills of the Rockies, roughly 120 kilometers southwest of Dawson Creek. Violence of this nature is historically rare in the community. Police remain on the scene, and residents are advised to avoid the area surrounding the school until further notice.
