Palm Springs law enforcement officials have apprehended a 53-year-old man suspected of attacking a hiker in an unprovoked stabbing incident on the CV Link trail late last month. The victim, who was hiking alone when the assault occurred, sustained injuries and received treatment at a local hospital before being released. Authorities have charged the suspect with attempted murder and resisting an officer as the investigation continues.
Incident on CV Link Trail Leads to Assault Charges
On December 31, 2025, shortly before midday, a male hiker was walking along the CV Link trail between Golf Club Drive and Cathedral Canyon Drive in Palm Springs when he encountered an individual later identified by police. The victim reported making eye contact with the man as they passed each other. Approximately 15 minutes later, the same individual allegedly returned wearing a ski mask, shouted profanities, and attacked the hiker, knocking him to the ground before stabbing him.
The victim was treated for his wounds at a nearby hospital and later released. Officials described the assault as seemingly random and unprovoked, noting that no property was demanded during the encounter.
Suspect Located and Arrested After Foot Pursuit
Investigators identified the suspect as Jacob Masters, 53, of Palm Springs. On January 11, law enforcement located him on East Ramon Road near the CV Link trail close to the Cimarron Golf Course. When officers attempted to detain Masters, he fled on foot but was soon apprehended.
Masters was taken into custody and booked into the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility. He faces charges including attempted murder and resisting an officer. Police continue to investigate the motive behind the attack as no clear reason for the assault has yet been determined.
