Shocking School Shooting Shakes Suburban Maryland Campus
ROCKVILLE, Md. — A student was seriously wounded in a shooting at Thomas S. Wootton High School on Monday afternoon, and law enforcement has taken another student into custody in connection with the incident, authorities said.
Officials reported that the injured teen, a 16-year-old male, was discovered with a gunshot wound in a school hallway shortly after 2:15 p.m. and was rushed to a local hospital. He is currently listed in stable condition.
Police quickly identified and detained a second 16-year-old student nearby following the response by Montgomery County and Rockville City police departments. Investigators emphasized that at this time there is no continuing danger to the public or other students.
Lockdown and Response: How Officials Handled the Crisis
The shooting prompted an immediate lockdown of the Rockville campus as law enforcement and school officials secured the scene. Students were eventually transported to Robert Frost Middle School for reunification with families later in the afternoon.
Authorities say the suspect will face charges as an adult once the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office reviews the case. While the firearm used in the incident has not yet been recovered, police continue to pursue all investigative leads.
Community Reaction and Ongoing Investigation
Parents raced to the area as news of the shooting spread, with many anxiously trying to contact their children during the lockdown. Local officials also made mental health support available to students and families affected by the traumatic event.
The motive behind the shooting remains under investigation, and students who witnessed the scene are being interviewed by investigators. School officials confirmed the high school will reopen on schedule in the coming days.
