Rescheduled Mummers String Band Spectacular Takes Place at Chilly Lincoln Financial Field
The Philadelphia Mummers String Band Association held its 2026 String Band Spectacular at Lincoln Financial Field on Saturday, January 31, marking a historic rescheduling of the traditional New Year’s Day competition. The event, which serves as the official judged portion of the Mummers Parade, was moved to the stadium after high winds and unsafe conditions forced a postponement on January 1.
Performers faced brisk temperatures at the open-air venue, a factor that significantly influenced the lineup. The Avalon String Band withdrew from the competition prior to the event, citing the extreme cold forecast as a safety risk for their musicians and a hazard for their delicate instruments. Despite the chill, other bands proceeded with their elaborate mini-musicals, showcasing the costumes and arrangements that mark the 125th anniversary of the tradition.
The shift to a ticketed stadium event contrasts with the free, street-level experience typical of the Broad Street parade. While the move ensured the competition could occur safely after the earlier cancellation, the cavernous stadium setting offers a different atmosphere than the dense crowds of Center City. Organizers emphasized that the rescheduling was necessary to give the bands the competitive spotlight they deserve after the weather-impacted holiday parade.
