Pima County Sheriff’s Department Seeks Earlier Security Footage in Nancy Guthrie Abduction Case
TUCSON, Ariz. — The investigation into the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of Today show co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, has taken a new direction as law enforcement officials expand their search for digital evidence. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department is now asking Nancy Guthrie’s neighbors to check their home security cameras for footage from an earlier timeframe than the early morning of Feb. 1, when she was likely abducted.
This latest appeal marks a significant shift in the timeline of the investigation. Previously, authorities had focused heavily on the hours immediately surrounding Guthrie’s disappearance, specifically the early morning of Sunday, Feb. 1. Investigators have already recovered and released surveillance video from that morning showing a masked individual, dressed in dark clothing and wearing a backpack, approaching Guthrie’s home in the Catalina Foothills. The suspect in the video appeared to tamper with a camera at the front door.
By widening the timeframe for requested video footage, detectives are likely looking for evidence that the suspect or suspects may have been “casing” the residence or the neighborhood in the days leading up to the abduction. Residents in the area are urged to review their systems for any suspicious vehicles, individuals, or activity that may have occurred prior to the weekend of the disappearance.
Nancy Guthrie was last seen on the evening of Saturday, Jan. 31. She had spent the evening dining at her daughter’s home and was dropped off at her own residence around 9:45 p.m. Her family reported her missing the following day after she failed to appear for church services. Inside her home, investigators found the back door unlocked and the television left on, fueling concerns that she was taken against her will.
The case has drawn national attention and the involvement of the FBI. A reward of $50,000 is currently being offered for information leading to Guthrie’s recovery or the arrest of those responsible. Earlier this week, a person of interest was detained for questioning in Rio Rico, south of Tucson, but was subsequently released.
Authorities are asking anyone with video footage or information, regardless of how insignificant it may seem, to contact the Pima County Sheriff’s Department immediately.
