A shocking holiday-season incident in Bangor has left local residents alarmed. Police say a 50-year-old man was found asleep on a tenant’s couch after allegedly breaking into their apartment, unwrapping their Christmas gifts — and refusing to leave when confronted. The bizarre case has prompted authorities to issue holiday safety warnings across the community.

Unexpected Intruder, Unwrapped Presents, and a Nap

According to police reports, the incident occurred early on November 23, when the apartment’s occupant awoke to find an unknown man — later identified as 50-year-old Jose Harvey of Milford — sleeping on their couch.
Nearby, the tenant discovered that several Christmas gifts had been unwrapped. Doors were reportedly locked, but a bathroom window was open — suggesting that may have been the suspect’s entry point.

Arrest and Charges: What Went Down

When police arrived at the scene — after the tenant called them around 8:40 a.m. — Harvey allegedly refused to leave and could not offer a coherent reason for being in the home.
He was subsequently arrested and charged with aggravated criminal trespass. Harvey was taken to jail, though records indicate he was no longer being held by November 30.

Holiday Safety: Police Urge Vigilance

In the wake of the incident, the Bangor Police Department (BPD) used the case as a reminder for residents to double-check their home security — especially with doors and windows. They advised against leaving gifts or packages in plain view, whether at home or in cars.
As the holiday season approaches, officials also urged everyone to treat others’ property with respect and kindness.
