Hillary Clinton Condemns Trump Administration’s Ukraine Policy as “Disgraceful” at Munich Security Conference
Former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton delivered a scathing critique of the Trump administration’s foreign policy regarding the ongoing war in Ukraine, describing the current U.S. stance as “disgraceful” and “shameful.” Speaking during a panel discussion at the Munich Security Conference on Sunday, Clinton addressed reports that the White House is pressuring Kyiv into a peace agreement that would require significant territorial concessions to Russia.
“I think that the Trump administration’s position toward Ukraine is disgraceful,” Clinton told the audience in Munich. “I think the effort to force Ukraine into a surrender deal with Putin is shameful.”
Her comments come amidst growing diplomatic tensions and unverified reports of a so-called “surrender deal” that would purportedly see Ukraine cede the Donbas region to Russian control in exchange for a cessation of hostilities. While the Trump administration has not publicly confirmed the specifics of such a plan, Clinton argued that any attempt to coerce Ukraine into capitulation represents a fundamental betrayal of democratic values.
Clinton went on to characterize the administration’s approach as a “historic error,” accusing both President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin of exploiting the conflict. “I think the effort that Putin and Trump are making to profit off the misery and death of the Ukrainian people is a historic error and corrupt to the nth degree,” she stated.
During the panel, titled “The West-West Divide,” Clinton framed the conflict not merely as a territorial dispute but as a frontline battle for Western civilization and democracy. She emphasized that Ukrainians are “losing thousands of people” to defend values enshrined in international charters. She further accused President Trump of undermining the transatlantic alliance, asserting that he has “betrayed the West,” the NATO Charter, and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
The former Secretary of State also suggested that the administration’s policy is driven by indifference or a lack of understanding regarding the scale of suffering in Ukraine. She drew a sharp comparison between the leadership styles of Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, warning that the U.S. president is “modeling himself” after the Russian leader by seeking unaccountable power.
Clinton’s remarks highlight the deepening rift between the current U.S. administration and traditional foreign policy establishments regarding the war in Eastern Europe. She concluded her critique by advocating for a different strategic approach, suggesting that instead of forcing concessions, the West should empower Ukraine to strike deeper into Russian territory to create leverage for genuine negotiations.
