A Georgia courtroom delivered a long-awaited sentence this week as a mother was ordered to serve 25 years in prison for her role in her young son’s death. The punishment was handed down on February 4 — the date that would have marked his ninth birthday — bringing a solemn moment of accountability in a case that shocked the community.

Sentence Delivered on Child’s Birthday

On Wednesday, a judge sentenced 31-year-old Keara Sade Cotton to 25 years behind bars after she pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and concealing the death of her 3-year-old son, Jayceion Mathis. Prosecutors said Cotton’s actions led to her child’s death while he was in her care in November 2021.

Officials noted the emotional weight of issuing the sentence on the child’s would-be ninth birthday, with local authorities saying it underscored the community’s desire for justice in the tragic case.

Remains Found Hidden Near Shopping Center

After Jayceion went missing, his remains were eventually discovered months later in a field behind a shopping center in Cordele, Georgia. Authorities found the boy’s body wrapped in a shower curtain and a shopping bag, prompting a homicide investigation.

Before the discovery, the Georgia Department of Family and Children Services made multiple attempts to check on Jayceion’s safety, but Cotton had moved and avoided contact with investigators. Family members also reported the child missing after not seeing him for several months.

Investigation and Prosecution

Cotton was arrested in January 2022 and initially claimed she had found Jayceion unresponsive and chose not to report his death, according to court filings. Due to the advanced state of decomposition, medical examiners could not determine a precise cause of death.

The investigation was led by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation with support from local police and sheriff’s offices. Prosecutors argued the 25-year sentence reflected the gravity of concealing a child’s death and burdening law enforcement with a prolonged search.
