Two Dead in Mistissini Shooting Incident

MISTISSINI, Quebec — A deadly gun attack in the northern Cree community of Mistissini has claimed the lives of two men, provincial police confirmed Thursday. The victims, both in their 30s and residents of the area, were fatally shot inside a vehicle late Wednesday evening in an incident law enforcement officials say may be connected to organized crime.

Community Locked Down as Authorities Investigate

Quebec Provincial Police spokesperson Sgt. Hugues Beaulieu reported that the shooting occurred at around 9 p.m. local time on Wednesday night. In the aftermath, the Cree Nation of Mistissini placed the community under a temporary lockdown while officers swept the area and worked to determine if any ongoing danger remained. Officials later confirmed that there is no active shooter currently in the community.

Chief Michael Petawabano expressed gratitude for the community’s cooperation during the lockdown, stressing that normal activities could resume only after authorities verified it was safe.

Location & Ongoing Inquiry

Mistissini, nestled on the shores of Lake Mistassini some 600 km northwest of Quebec City, is now the focus of a detailed police investigation. Both the Cree Nation leadership and provincial law enforcement are working together to piece together the events that led to the shooting, and residents have been urged to come forward with any information that may assist investigators.
