Davie Police Investigate Fatal Shooting Incident Outside South University Drive Beauty School
Davie Police are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred Tuesday afternoon in the parking lot of the Aveda Institute on South University Drive. Officers responded to the scene in the 4100 block shortly after 2:00 p.m. following reports of gunfire. While initial reports indicated one person was declared dead at the scene and a second individual was transported to a local hospital in critical condition, authorities have updated the investigation to confirm a murder-suicide involving two individuals with a prior domestic relationship.
The victim was identified as 20-year-old Aileen Martinez, a student at the cosmetology school. Investigators stated that the shooter, identified as 25-year-old Jose Orpi, shot Martinez before turning the weapon on himself. Orpi was transported to a medical facility where he later died from his injuries.
Although the initial chaos prompted immediate lockdowns at nearby institutions, including St. David Catholic School, and generated conflicting witness accounts regarding an active shooter, police quickly clarified that they were not searching for additional suspects. The incident caused significant disruption along the busy University Drive corridor as crime scene units cordoned off the area near the educational facility. Police have confirmed the shooting was an isolated domestic incident and there is no further threat to the community.
