Cuba Suspends Jet Fuel Supplies for International Airlines for One Month Amid Deepening Energy Crisis
Cuba has issued an urgent warning to international airlines, stating that it will be unable to provide jet fuel for a period of one month due to a critical shortage of energy supplies. According to an official at a European carrier, the suspension is effectively immediately and forces foreign operators to drastically alter their flight plans.
The disruption was confirmed via a Notice to Air Missions (NOTAM) issued by aviation authorities in Havana. The notice, identified as A0356/26, explicitly states that Jet A-1 fuel will not be available at major hubs, including José Martí International Airport in Havana, as well as airports in Varadero, Holguín, and Cayo Coco. The suspension is scheduled to run from February 10, 2026, through March 11, 2026.
This development presents significant logistical hurdles for international carriers. Airlines flying to the island must now engage in “tankering”—a practice where aircraft carry enough fuel for both the inbound and return journeys. However, due to weight restrictions, this is not feasible for many long-haul flights from Europe or South America. Consequently, these carriers may be forced to schedule technical stops in neighboring countries such as Jamaica, the Bahamas, or Mexico to refuel before returning to their home bases.
The fuel suspension is the latest symptom of Cuba’s severe economic and energy crisis. The island relies heavily on imported fuel to generate electricity and power its transportation sector. In recent weeks, the government has implemented emergency measures, including rolling blackouts and a reduced four-day workweek for state employees, to conserve dwindling resources.
The timing of the fuel cut could severely impact Cuba’s vital tourism industry, which is currently in its peak winter season. With flight cancellations a potential risk due to the increased operational costs and logistical complexities, the measure threatens to isolate the island further during a period when foreign currency from tourism is most needed.
