YouTube TV Unveils $65 Sports Plan, Offering Relief to NBC Sports Philadelphia Fans
Philadelphia sports fans accustomed to rising streaming costs have a new reason to celebrate this week, as YouTube TV announces a restructured pricing tier specifically designed for sports enthusiasts.
The Deep Dive
Starting this week, YouTube TV subscribers can opt for a new “Sports Plan” priced at $65 per month. This new tier represents a roughly 22% discount compared to the standard Base Plan, which currently sits at $83 per month. Crucially for local viewers, this package includes NBC Sports Philadelphia, ensuring continued access to Phillies, 76ers, and Flyers games.
The package consolidates major sports networks, including the full ESPN lineup (with ESPN Unlimited), FS1, and the TNT Sports family (TNT, TBS, truTV), alongside local RSNs like NBC Sports Philadelphia. This move marks a significant pivot for the Google-owned service, which has previously forced users into a comprehensive “one-size-fits-all” bundle.
Objections & Trade-offs
While the $18 monthly saving is attractive, it comes with a catch: the removal of general entertainment and lifestyle programming. Subscribers switching to the Sports Plan will lose access to popular channels such as HGTV, Comedy Central, Bravo, and major news networks like CNN and MSNBC.
Additionally, budget-conscious fans might still find the price steep compared to the standalone direct-to-consumer (DTC) option launched last year. The “Peacock add-on” for NBC Sports Philadelphia currently costs approximately $33 per month (including the base Peacock subscription). Fans who only care about Philly teams and do not need national networks like ESPN or TNT would arguably save more money by canceling YouTube TV entirely and using the Peacock app, though they would lose the DVR features and integrated interface YouTube TV provides.
Background & Context
This pricing adjustment comes after years of steady increases for YouTube TV, which launched in 2017 at just $35 per month. As carriage fees for sports rights have exploded, the service’s price has more than doubled, often serving as a point of contention during carriage disputes—including the contentious negotiations with NBCUniversal in late 2025 that nearly led to a blackout of Philadelphia sports.
The introduction of genre-specific “skinny bundles” (Sports, Entertainment, and News tiers) signals that YouTube TV is finally responding to the market saturation and churn caused by high prices, attempting to retain subscribers who might otherwise defect to cheaper, standalone app subscriptions.
