New Files Reveal 2002 Email Exchange Between Melania and Ghislaine Maxwell
Newly released Justice Department documents regarding the investigation into Jeffrey Epstein have brought to light a 2002 email exchange appearing to be between Melania Trump and Ghislaine Maxwell. The correspondence, included in a batch of files released on Friday, suggests a friendly rapport between the future First Lady and the convicted sex trafficker during the early years of Melania’s relationship with Donald Trump.
The email, dated October 23, 2002, is addressed to “Dear G” and signed “Love, Melania.” In the message, the sender references a recent profile on Jeffrey Epstein published in New York Magazine. “Nice story about JE in NY mag. You look great in the picture,” the email reads. The message continues with inquiries about Maxwell’s travels and a request to meet. “How was Palm Beach? I cannot wait to go down. Give me a call when you are back in NY. Have a great time!”
A response attributed to Maxwell, also contained in the files, addresses the sender as “Sweet pea.” Maxwell wrote that her plans had changed and she was returning to New York, though she noted she might not have time to meet before leaving again. “I will try and call though,” Maxwell’s reply stated.
At the time of the exchange, Melania Knauss was dating real estate mogul Donald Trump. The pair had previously been photographed socializing with Epstein and Maxwell at Mar-a-Lago and other events around the turn of the millennium. The email appears to be the first written communication between Melania and Maxwell to surface in the public files.
While the email addresses in the documents are redacted, preventing definitive technical verification of the sender, the context and signature align with the timeline of Melania’s known social circle in New York. Donald Trump has stated in previous years that he severed ties with Epstein well before the financier’s arrest and subsequent death in 2019. Neither Donald nor Melania Trump has been accused of any criminal wrongdoing in connection with the Epstein investigation.
In response to the broader release of documents, which reportedly total over three million pages, representatives for the Justice Department noted that the production includes everything sent to the FBI, warning that it “may include fake or falsely submitted images, documents or videos.” However, this specific email exchange appears to be part of recovered correspondence rather than a public tip. As of the document release, representatives for Melania Trump have not issued a specific comment on the email exchange. Maxwell is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence for her role in Epstein’s sex trafficking operations.
