Two People Confirmed Dead After Massive House Explosion in Oswego
Two individuals were found deceased Thursday evening following a house explosion in southwest suburban Oswego, Illinois. The incident occurred shortly after 5:00 p.m. in the 200 block of Fox Chase Drive North, where emergency responders arrived to find a two-story residence completely leveled and engulfed in flames.
Fire crews from the Oswego Fire Protection District, assisted by neighboring agencies, worked to extinguish the blaze, though a natural gas line continued to burn for some time after the structure collapsed. Nicor Gas representatives responded to the scene to clamp the line and secure the utility supply. Following an extensive search of the debris field, authorities confirmed that two victims were located within the rubble.
Officials have not yet released the identities of the deceased, pending notification of their families. While preliminary reports suggest a potential gas leak may be involved, the exact cause of the detonation remains under active investigation by local fire officials, the Illinois State Fire Marshal, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). Authorities have not stated whether foul play is ruled out, emphasizing that the inquiry is in its early stages.
Oswego is located approximately 50 miles southwest of Chicago. Neighbors in the surrounding subdivision reported hearing a loud boom that shook nearby homes, with smoke visible for miles across Kendall County. The area remains cordoned off as investigators continue to examine the site.
