Key West Secures Top Tourism Ranking As Miami Misses Main List Again
Key West has extended its remarkable streak as a premier travel hotspot, landing the number eight spot on Tripadvisor’s 2026 Travelers’ Choice Awards for Best of the Best Destinations in the United States. This marks another year of consistent acclaim for the Southernmost City, which has appeared in the top rankings annually since 2012. In contrast, Miami failed to crack the top 10 for general destinations, a status it has not achieved since 2013, highlighting a divergence in traveler preferences between the two Florida staples.
The recognition for Key West comes from an analysis of millions of reviews submitted by global travelers between October 2024 and September 2025. Visitors consistently praised the island’s laid-back atmosphere, historic charm, and iconic attractions such as the Hemingway Home & Museum and the nightly sunset celebrations at Mallory Square. The city was the only Florida location to make the top 10 in the primary destination category, beating out larger hubs. Tripadvisor’s data suggests that travelers are increasingly valuing the “slow pace” and walkable nature of Key West over the high-energy urban environments found elsewhere in the state.
While Miami was absent from the general “Best of the Best” list, it did not go unrecognized. The city secured fifth place in the “Top Food Destinations” category, earning praise for its diverse culinary scene that ranges from Little Havana food tours to high-end dining in South Beach. However, analysts note that Miami’s focus on luxury tourism and attracting wealthy new residents may be alienating the “ordinary” traveler who drives mass-market rankings. High costs for accommodations and dining in Miami, coupled with persistent traffic congestion, were cited as potential reasons for its exclusion from the broader popularity list.
Despite Key West’s accolades, the island faces its own set of challenges that potential visitors should consider. The surge in popularity has led to reports of near-maximum capacity during peak seasons, driving up hotel rates and making affordability a significant concern for budget-conscious families. A four-day trip can now cost upwards of $2,000, and limited room inventory means widespread availability is rare. Additionally, the drive along the Overseas Highway, while scenic, can suffer from heavy delays, and the humid subtropical climate poses weather risks during hurricane season.
The broader national rankings placed New York City, Las Vegas, and Oahu in the top three spots, respectively. Florida’s tourism landscape remains competitive, but the continued divergence between Key West’s mass appeal and Miami’s niche success suggests a shift in what domestic travelers are prioritizing—favoring unique, relaxation-focused experiences over bustling metropolitan getaways.
