ICE Officials Defend New Detention Facilities Amid Warehouse Conversion Concerns
Department of Homeland Security (DHS) officials are pushing back against criticism regarding plans to convert industrial properties into immigration detention centers. Responding to reports of proposed facilities in locations such as New York, Virginia, and Texas, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) stated, “These will not be warehouses — they will be well structured detention facilities meeting our regular detention standards.”
The agency emphasized that its law enforcement activities are designed to “keep Americans safe” and confirmed that ICE is actively working to expand detention capacity nationwide. This expansion aligns with broader enforcement initiatives targeting individuals with criminal records, which the agency described as “the worst of the worst,” including those convicted of violent crimes.
