11-Year-Old Girl Disappears During Lake Erie Boating Trip
A tragic boating incident on Lake Erie has led to criminal charges after an 11-year-old girl went missing during what authorities described as a recreational boat trip.
Officials said the child disappeared shortly after the boat left Meinke Marina on July 1. She was reportedly under the care of a 41-year-old Toledo woman at the time of the incident. The woman has since been charged with child endangerment as investigators continue working to determine exactly what happened.
The case has drawn significant attention as emergency crews carried out an extensive search operation across the lake.
One Passenger Found Dead as Investigation Continues
Authorities confirmed that another passenger, a 38-year-old man, was found dead the morning after the incident. Preliminary findings indicate he likely drowned, although investigators are still examining the circumstances surrounding his death.
The woman survived by swimming to shore, where she was later questioned by law enforcement. Search teams also recovered the boat near West Sister Island during the ongoing investigation.
Officials have not released additional details about the sequence of events that occurred on the boat.
Search Becomes Recovery Mission
After several days of searching, emergency responders shifted their efforts from a rescue operation to a recovery mission.
Multiple local and state agencies joined the search across Lake Erie. During the operation, authorities located the body of a young girl near the shoreline. However, officials have not yet publicly confirmed the identity.
Investigators continue to gather evidence while the woman remains in custody on a $50,000 bond. The case remains under active investigation, and authorities are expected to release more information as it becomes available.
