Zambian authorities have arrested several opposition figures following the country’s presidential and parliamentary elections, saying the suspects posed a threat to national security. The arrests came as votes were still being counted and political tensions increased around the closely watched election.

Authorities Say 11 People Were Detained

According to the Zambian government, police detained 11 people during a security operation on election night. Officials said opposition presidential candidate Brian Mundubile was present when the arrests took place.

The government said the operation followed an exchange of gunfire after shots were allegedly fired from the premises at law enforcement officers. Authorities also claimed that those detained were found with military-grade weapons, ammunition and other materials they said were intended for an armed uprising.

Six of the people reportedly in custody were identified by authorities, including a spokesperson linked to Mundubile. The government said the remaining detainees included senior members of political parties.

Mundubile Calls Raid a Threat to His Life

Mundubile said heavily armed personnel entered his residence after the election in what he described as a potentially life-threatening attack.

Opposition representatives have also called for information about members of Mundubile’s political circle who they say were detained or could not be located. The arrests have added another layer of uncertainty to an election already marked by political disagreements and security concerns.

Opposition parties and civil society organizations have accused the government of increasing restrictions on political activity during the election period. They have pointed to limitations involving meetings and campaign events. Government officials have rejected accusations that they are carrying out a broader campaign of political repression.

Election Results Remain Closely Watched

The arrests occurred as Zambia continued counting votes from the August 13 presidential and parliamentary elections. Partial results had President Hakainde Hichilema ahead of his main challenger, Mundubile, as officials worked to complete the national tally.

The election is an important test for Hichilema, who is seeking another term after his administration’s efforts to improve Zambia’s economy following a major debt crisis.

The latest developments have increased attention on the political situation in Zambia as authorities continue the counting process. The opposition has raised concerns over the conduct of the election, while the government maintains that its security actions were necessary to protect the country.
