Hawaii Doctor Seeks Retrial After Conviction in Wife Attack Case My5IA1dnU11oO bbMRB1HssC5eFxoB6QQZStOBjOJ0ikzP6NhH8 PgOVVMYqPraAncm4E Gu

A Hawaii doctor convicted of attempting to kill his wife during a hiking trip on Oahu is asking the court for a new trial, with his defense team alleging juror misconduct and other errors during the proceedings.

Gerhardt Konig, a 47-year-old anesthesiologist, was found guilty of attempted manslaughter on April 8, 2026, after prosecutors had accused him of attempted murder. His attorneys now argue that problems surrounding the jury deliberations may have affected the verdict.

Defense Raises Concerns About Jury Conduct

Konig’s legal team has pointed to comments reportedly made by jurors after the trial as part of its request for a retrial. The defense claims those remarks raise questions about whether jurors unanimously agreed on the required intent when reaching their decision.

Attorneys have also raised an allegation involving a social media video that they say suggests one juror may have communicated with another person during deliberations. Such communication could violate court instructions governing jury deliberations.

Defense attorney Thomas Otake has argued that the alleged problems should be examined by the court to determine whether Konig received a fair trial. Judge Paul Wong has indicated that jurors will be brought back for questioning as the court considers the retrial request. A further hearing is scheduled for Sept. 11.

What Happened During the Hawaii Hiking Trip?

The case stems from a March 2025 incident on the Pali Puka Trail on Oahu. Prosecutors alleged that Konig attacked his wife, Arielle Konig, during a birthday trip and attempted to push her toward a cliff.

According to testimony presented at trial, Arielle said her husband also tried to inject her with an unknown substance before striking her with a rock. The confrontation ended after nearby hikers heard her cries and intervened.

Konig offered a different version of events in court. He testified that Arielle attacked him first with a rock and said he struck her while attempting to defend himself.

The jury ultimately rejected the attempted-murder charge but convicted him of attempted manslaughter based on extreme mental or emotional disturbance. Under the charge, Konig could face as much as 20 years in prison.

Retrial Request Could Bring New Legal Review

The defense’s latest move does not overturn the conviction. Instead, the court must determine whether the alleged jury misconduct or other claimed errors were serious enough to justify a new trial.

The case has drawn significant attention because of the sharply different accounts given by the husband and wife and the jury’s decision to convict Konig on a lesser offense rather than attempted murder.

Konig remains in custody while his legal team pursues the retrial request. The upcoming hearing is expected to provide another opportunity for the court to examine the claims surrounding the jury’s conduct and determine what happens next in the Hawaii doctor case.
