Chile Captures Former Military Officer in Historic Human Rights Case

More than five decades after the killing of legendary Chilean singer-songwriter Víctor Jara, authorities have arrested the last convicted fugitive connected to the case. Retired military colonel Nelson Haase Mazzei, who had evaded prison since 2023, has now been taken into custody to begin serving his sentence for crimes committed during Chile’s military dictatorship.

Convicted Officer Finally Begins Prison Sentence

Haase Mazzei was found guilty for his role in the kidnapping and murder of Víctor Jara and former prisons chief Littré Quiroga Carvajal. Originally convicted in 2018, his punishment was later increased in 2023 to 25 years and two days in prison along with the sentences of six other former military officers.

Before reporting to prison, the retired officer disappeared and remained a fugitive for three years. Chilean police recently tracked him down, and a Santiago appeals court ordered his immediate imprisonment, making him the last convicted individual in the case to begin serving his sentence.

Víctor Jara’s Murder Remains a Symbol of Chile’s Dictatorship

Víctor Jara, one of Chile’s most influential folk musicians and a leading figure in the New Chilean Song movement, was arrested shortly after the military coup that overthrew President Salvador Allende in September 1973.

He was detained at the State Technical University and taken to what is now known as Víctor Jara Stadium, where investigators later determined he was tortured and executed. His death became one of the most recognized examples of the human rights abuses committed during General Augusto Pinochet’s dictatorship.

Family Welcomes Arrest but Says Justice Came Too Late

Although the arrest closes the search for the final convicted fugitive, Jara’s family says true justice remains incomplete due to the decades that passed before those responsible were imprisoned.

Since Chile’s return to democracy, the country has established truth commissions and legal investigations into crimes committed between 1973 and 1990. Authorities have also continued efforts to locate victims of forced disappearances through national search initiatives launched in recent years.
