Mexican Morena Lawmaker Found Dead in Veracruz

Mexican federal lawmaker Zenyazen Escobar, a member of the ruling Morena party, was found dead inside his vehicle in Veracruz on Friday, September 4, with at least one gunshot wound. His death comes less than a year before Mexico is scheduled to hold local and federal elections.

Escobar represented Veracruz, a coastal state known for its important oil infrastructure. Authorities have opened an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death, but officials have not yet provided a definitive explanation for what happened.

Veracruz Attorney General Lisbeth Jimenez said investigators were working to establish the facts. State Secretary General Ricardo Ahued also said the vehicle did not appear to have obvious signs of violence.

Mexico’s lower house of Congress expressed condolences to Escobar’s relatives, friends and colleagues and called for a complete investigation.

Authorities Take Over Investigation

The discovery of Escobar’s body has prompted both state and federal authorities to examine the case. Veracruz officials said the state prosecutor’s office began gathering evidence at the scene, while Mexico’s federal prosecutor’s office is expected to take over the investigation because Escobar was a federal legislator.

Officials have urged investigators to pursue every possible line of inquiry before reaching conclusions about the circumstances of the lawmaker’s death.

The case is attracting additional attention because of Mexico’s continuing struggle with political violence and organized crime. Authorities have not established a connection between Escobar’s death and organized criminal groups.

Political Violence Raises Election Concerns

Escobar’s death comes as Mexico prepares for elections scheduled for June 6, when voters are expected to choose mayors, state legislators, city council members and governors.

Political violence has been a recurring concern during previous election cycles, particularly in areas where organized crime groups have attempted to influence political figures and strengthen their territorial control.

Data Civica recorded at least 30 incidents classified as political-criminal violence across 11 Mexican states during July alone. Fourteen of those cases involved homicides. Zacatecas recorded the highest number with 10 incidents, followed by Michoacan and Quintana Roo with four each. Oaxaca recorded three, while Baja California and Veracruz each registered two.

The incidents tracked by Data Civica include threats, killings, armed attacks, attempted assassinations, disappearances and kidnappings.

Mexico’s National Electoral Institute, known as INE, has also identified organized crime as a major threat to democratic processes. Previous court cases have documented instances involving armed groups attempting to pressure voters, along with the theft or destruction of election materials.

As the 2026 elections approach, Escobar’s death is likely to intensify scrutiny of security conditions facing politicians and communities across Mexico. Investigators have yet to determine exactly how the lawmaker died or whether his death was connected to the wider pattern of political-criminal violence.
